Play It Super Safe Program

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1% of the world’s population has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – over 75,000,000 people. Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring reported that one in 54 U.S. children has autism. Also, boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than girls.

It is possible to detect signs of autism as early as 18 months or younger, because ASD affects the way children develop and interact with the world. They do not develop at the same pace as their peers.

The sooner a child begins treatment, the better prognosis they will have because a child’s brain is more impressionable at a younger age. Research proves that intervening early can improve a child’s development and future independence. Therefore, treatments, such as the PLAY IT SUPER SAFE PROGRAM, have a greater chance of being effective and long-lasting.

Children Playing Together

Some of The Early Signs of Autism Include:

  • Limited or no eye contact

  • Few or no smiles or facial expressions

  • Limited play with others

  • Limited sharing of sounds

  • Not looking at objects being pointed to

  • Not meeting age-appropriate speech and language milestones.

Other signs that are seen in children who have ASD per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), may include:

  • Repetitive play or verbal expressiveness (echolalia)

  • A fixation on certain activities, ideas, or concepts

  • A reluctance to engage in new experiences or to disrupt routines

  • Aversion to certain forms of interaction, especially hugging or cuddling

  • Avoiding eye contact and being difficult to engage in conversation

  • Missing verbal or physical cues, such as not looking at where someone is pointing

  • Having difficulty understanding others’ feelings or talking about feelings in general

  • Reluctance to socialize or a preference for isolation

  • Trouble expressing their needs or wishes

  • Unexpected reactions to certain sights, sounds, textures, or smells

  • Tantrums or explosive aggression with unexpected triggers

Also, some children with ASD may appear to have or have a learning disability, a behavior disorder, or mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, or an attention deficit disorder, and also co-occurring medical challenges, such as Gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort, trouble sleeping, or seizures.

While traditional treatments are helpful, we realized that MORE needed to be done!

Children Playing Together

What Is It?

The Play It Super Safe Program combines the research-based, Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) with the expert advice of a Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology to help individuals regulate their nervous system: improving social behavior, cognitive functioning, and communication. It helps them feel calmer, reduces sensitivity to sounds, and improves their ability to notice their feelings. One way that the nervous system reacts is based on sounds that alert the body of safety or danger.  If the ears filter sound incorrectly, it can cause the nervous system to react inappropriately. This makes the child feel "unsafe" which psychologically makes the child react in a way to protect themselves. They try to regulate themselves (to feel safe) in the following ways: routines, being socially distant, object fixation, stimming, etc. When their system is focused on survival skills, their cognition, communication, behavior, and social skills suffer.
